Prospective and Transfer Students

Are You Ready to Touch the Future? Are You Ready to Teach?

Advisement, Admission to the Program
and Student Teaching

Students begin their journey immediately at the University with the opportunity to enroll in initial teacher education courses that incorporate practical experience in K-12 schools as early as their very first semester!

Planning & Advisement
Early and consistent communication with faculty advisors is essential to successfully completing a college degree. All teacher education programs are designed to be completed in 8 semesters, but there are very specific courses students must take, many of them in a designated order. It is important to contact the education department to obtain the necessary advisement forms and to be assigned an advisor as soon as students arrive on campus.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program
Admission into the program is separate from admission into the University. The teacher education admission process is completed during one of the early professional education courses called ED 301: Frameworks of Teaching, usually taken during the sophomore year. Requirements prior to admission include completion of 45 college credit hours and a minimum 2.6 cumulative GPA. After admission, students continue to take the remaining professional education courses along with their major courses.

Student Teaching
Students engage in this exciting and multi-faceted field experience during their final semester of the program. During the entire semester, students work along side a master teacher all day, every day in order to bring together all of their knowledge and skill as beginning teachers. Groups of student teachers and their cooperating teachers work together to form learning communities in partnership schools to best meet the needs of all the children. Requirements prior to student teaching include completion of all other required major and minor courses as well as passing the state licensure exam.
