Management Minor

Minor in Facilities
Management
The FM minor is available to non-Facilities
Management/Technology option students. FM minor graduates will be well prepared
to assume entry level or basic supervisory and administrative positions in
large, commercial and governmental activities like physical plant departments,
facilities, campuses and industrial parks related to:

- Banking/financial
- Electronics
- R&D
- Communications

Having received training from an officially recognized
program of the International Facility Management Association, FM minor students
will be versed in a wide variety of critical facility management competencies
including:
- Building systems
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Structure & interiors
- Computer applications
- Real Estate management
- Human & Environmental factors
- Planning & Program management
- Design & Project management

- Leading, managing, operating, and
administering the facilities’ functions
- Organizing & staffing

Facilities management is a customer service/technology
oriented profession and thus very compatible with liberal arts, business and
science curriculums. Characteristics of successful Facility Managers include:

Facility management simply means making sure that an
organization's physical workspaces and customer service areas (office's,
computer rooms, hotel rooms, recreation areas, etc.) best support the people who
use them and positively promote the purpose of the organization. It combines the
most interesting aspects of business administration, architecture, technology
and behavior science.
Some typical Facility Management responsibilities include:
- Long and short range planning
- Financial forecasting and budgeting
- Real estate acquisition and disposal
- Lease management
- Interior space planning
- Installation and space management

- Architectural design project coordination
- New construction or renovation work
- Operations and maintenance of building systems
- Telecommunications integration
- Security and general administrative services

Entry level positions generally pay from $27,000 to $52,000
annually. In 1998, the average salary for facility management professionals was
$64,000 while top facilities director and executive salaries ranged from $81,000
to over $200,000.
