Cooperative Industrial Experience

The faculty of the Engineering Technology Department in cooperation with local industry encourage students to participate in a joint Education in Industry program. This participation can take two forms:

  • Internship Programs - Part-time job placement opportunities are offered by many companies to ET students. Companies work with the University by announcing these opportunities through the ET Department and USC's Student Assistance Center. Students can apply typically by submitting their resume directly to the company. Companies interview and hire students as part-time employees and pay competitive hourly rates.

  • During the semester students should work no more than 20 hours per week. Full time employment opportunities exist in the summer time.

  • Cooperative Education Placement - Many companies offer these special education opportunities. Students are selected for this program by the Cooperative Education Faculty Advisor in cooperation with company supervisors. This program offers academic credit for industrial learning experiences while companies pay the students competitive hourly wages.
Use the following guide lines to determine if this program is for you:
    • Students must have Junior or Senior standing in their ET program in order to be eligible for this program.
    • You may sign up for 1 to 4 credits per semester. Each semester credit hour will require at least four (4) hours per week of industrial work (60 hours total.)
    • You may sign up for this program more than once - however, only up to four (4) credits may be counted towards the 124 credits required for graduation in one of the ET programs.
    • The credits are counted as a technical elective, upper division course.
    • After completing the industrial work, students must present their work experience to other students and the ET faculty at large. There are three options for this presentation:
      • Write a technical report on the work experience;
      • Make a professional oral presentation on your work experience; or
      • Create a poster describing your work experience.
    • Students will be graded by their industrial supervisor and the Coop. Faculty Advisor - A through F.

After you decide to participate in the coop program, you must take the following steps:

    • Secure a position with a company willing to employ you and participate in the evaluation process.
    • Download and print these three forms; they are in Adobe .pdf format. If you have difficulty printing the forms, you can also obtain them from the coop. advisors listed below:<
Form 1: Description of Cooperative Education Placement Program. This form needs to be signed by you to signify your acceptance of the objectives and policies. The Advisor with also sign when accepting you in the program.
Form 2: Placement Agreement. This form lists your employment information (to be completed by you), the learning objectives and grading criteria (to be completed jointly by you, your employer, and the coop advisor). All of three - you, your employer, and the coop advisor - need to sign this form before your employment begins.<
Form 3: Performance Evaluation. This form is to be given to your supervisor at work to be completed at the end of your work experience. You must submit this signed form together with your reports or poster to the coop advisor in order to receive proper academic credit.
    • See your faculty advisor to register for the correct number of credits for the coop course (CET/EET/MET 496) for the semester during which the employment occurs.
    • The coop advisor will contact you and your supervisor to help with any unresolved questions.
    • After your assignment is complete, you need to submit any reports or posters to your advisor and/or make arrangements for your in-class presentation, depending on the grading criteria you selected on Form 2.
    • It is our experience that you will not complete all requirements during a semester and receive an initial grade of I - incomplete. Your advisor will grant you a grace period, typically two or three months, during which to complete your report or make your presentation.

  • How you can participate - for additional information on how you can be part of this learning experience contact your program's Coop Advisor:
